The new Skilled Migrant Category pathways
| Pathway | Main requirements |
|---|---|
| Points-based | 6 points from qualifications, income or occupational registration, topped up with New Zealand skilled work. New Zealand qualifications now earn more points than overseas ones. |
| Skilled Work Experience | 5 years of skilled experience, including 2 years in New Zealand at 1.2 times the median wage. |
| Trades & Technician | A Level 4+ qualification and 4 years’ post-qualification experience, including 1.5 years in New Zealand at the median wage. |
Wage thresholds are now fixed at the rate that applied when your skilled work started, not when you apply for residence. The median wage is NZ$35.00 an hour from 9 March 2026.
