Choose the right test
Which PTE do you need?
There are three versions of PTE. Booking the wrong one is a common, costly mistake, so check which one your visa or university accepts.
PTE Academic
University admission and Australian and New Zealand visas, including student, graduate and skilled visas.
PTE Academic UKVI
UK visas that need a Secure English Language Test (SELT), for example study below degree level.
PTE Core
Canada: Express Entry, other economic programs and citizenship. Scores map to CLB levels. Not for university admission.
PTE exam pattern 2026
PTE Academic format and scoring
A computer-based test of about 2 hours at a test centre, scored from 10 to 90 overall and for each of listening, reading, speaking and writing.
Two new speaking tasks
Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation were added in August 2025.
Humans now check content
AI scores every answer, and trained raters also check content in longer tasks. Memorised templates that ignore the question can lose marks.
Overall is not a simple average
Many tasks score more than one skill, so the overall is calculated separately.
Valid for 2 years
Visa rules may be stricter: for example within 2 years for an Australian student visa.
| Part | Time | Task types |
|---|---|---|
| Speaking & Writing | 76–84 min | Personal Introduction (not scored), Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Answer Short Question, Summarize Group Discussion, Respond to a Situation, Summarize Written Text, Write Essay |
| Reading | 23–30 min | Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks, Multiple Choice (multiple and single answer), Reorder Paragraphs, Fill in the Blanks |
| Listening | 31–39 min | Summarize Spoken Text, Multiple Choice, Fill in the Blanks, Highlight Correct Summary, Select Missing Word, Highlight Incorrect Words, Write from Dictation |

PTE tips and tricks 2026
Six PTE tips from our trainers
Read Aloud
Fluency beats perfection
Keep a steady pace. If you trip on a word, carry on; stopping and restarting costs more than one mistake.
Repeat Sentence
Hold the meaning, not the words
Listen for the idea and rhythm. Repeating most of the sentence smoothly scores better than a few words with long pauses.
Describe Image
Answer what you see
Name the main trend, two key details and a conclusion. Generic templates that ignore the image can now lose content marks.
Respond to a Situation
Be polite and practical
Greet, state the problem or request, give a solution and close politely, as in a real phone call.
Write from Dictation
Every word counts
Type all the words you remember, even if the order is not perfect. Check spelling and plurals.
Time management
Watch the section timer
Reading and listening share time across tasks. Do not spend five minutes on one Reorder Paragraphs question.
